How often should I practice?

We recommend that you practice as often as your schedule allows. If you come every day you will advance faster than if you come once a week. For many people it’s simply not possible to come that often so whatever frequency you can manage is OK. Of course, it is better to practice once a week with all your heart rather than going through the motions on a daily basis.

How much are the dues?

Monthly dues are $80. Beginners are required to pay for their first two months and their yearly dues to the United States Aikido Federation, so their first payment is $185. This is a large commitment, so be sure aikido is right for you!

How long will it take to reach black belt?

On average, 5 to 8 years. It is important to remember, however, that attaining the black belt level does not mean you have “learned” Aikido, or that your training is over; it is a sign that you are ready to begin more serious practice.

Are there beginner’s classes?

We offer several beginner/basics classes per week. These classes are attended by both beginners and more experienced students, whose role is to help teach the newer students. Please see our schedule for details.

What do I wear to practice?

The first time you come to practice a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt is good enough. If you decide to take up aikido, you will have to purchase a gi (uniform). There are several places to buy them in Miami or online, and if you ask a dojo member he/she will be more than happy to advice you.

Are there any competitions or tournaments?

No. Aikido is a martial art that does not include competition.

How old is too old to practice?

There is really no age limit to aikido practice, the founder himself practiced well into his 80s.If you have an old injury or limitation you are concerned about make sure the instructor and your partner know about it.

What is the minimum age to practice?

The minimum age for practice is generally considered to be 16, although it really depends on the maturity of the particular individual.

Do people get hurt in Aikido?

In Aikido, like any physical activity with lots of contact, there is always a chance of injury. The ability to safely receive Aikido techniques is a skill that is taught in every class. Aikido is a vigorous activity; therefore, sore muscles and occasionally achy joints are part of practice. Real injuries are rare.

Why do you bow?

We bow to show respect to our partner and teacher. There is no religious meaning behind it.

How do I join the dojo?

You are welcome to observe any class in our schedule before joining. You may also sample one weeks worth of classes to see if aikido is right for you, or you may join during your first visit. When you decide to join you will be required to fill out a simple registration form and pay the initial dues.

Are there any contracts?

No.
